about
Following the release of their acclaimed debut EP Dawn in 2020, Painted Sky return with a brand new single “The Key”, out on 29th September. The single will be the first from their debut album ‘From The Blue’, which is set to be released next Spring.
Loosely based on traditional songs such as ‘The Keys of Canterbury’ and ‘Marry Me’, ‘The Key’ is an original song by George Brandon that explores motifs of unrequited love and acceptance still current today. Brandon’s take on the traditional encompasses Painted Sky’s attitude towards the future of modern folk, bringing together both traditional concepts and styles with modern harmonies and structure.
The track juxtaposes the jangling glee of morris dances and rhythms with contemporary and anthemic tune, riff and harmony, expertly brought to life with the production of Blair Dunlop, drumming of Fred Claridge and expressive playing of Holly and George Brandon on fiddle and guitar respectively. The song builds to a swirling climax, which altogether epitomizes Painted Sky’s forthcoming debut album.
